INSTALLING a roof over the centre court at Wimbledon is a prelude to thedirection of sport in the 21st century.

We should not be surprised that even the stuffy moguls who control Wimbledon are intoroofs. Even Shakespeare anticipated it a few centuries back.

The Bard of Avon, no mean doubles player, himself, as Anne Hathaway would vouch,had this to say: "This most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o'erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire."

Mind you, I think he may have got it a bit wrong with this "roof fretted with fire". I gather that it will take ten full minutes to close the damn thing when rain threatens. Which …
