By the early twentieth century, the lightness and transparency of glass had come to define all that was good about modernism. From the Crystal Palace designed by Sir Joseph Paxton (1803-1865) and built for London's Great Exhibition of 1851, to the glass skyscrapers by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) of the 1920s, the transparency of buildings clad in sheets of glass symbolized a new free and open society. The Great Depression reinforced the utopian connotations of glass, for science and industry represented positive forces that would propel society to better economic times.
