Under the shadow of resignations by prime ministers in the face of setbacks in previous House of Councillors elections, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi will confront one of the toughest political challenges of his career in the upper house election in July.

If the Liberal Democratic Party, which Koizumi leads, does well in the upcoming election, he looks set to become the longest-serving prime minister since Yasuhiro Nakasone, who retained the position for five years in the 1980s.
