PRESIDENT Macapagal-Arroyo is studying whether to extend the Christmas truce with communist rebels which ends tomorrow, according to presidential spokesperson Ignacio Bunye.

"The President will await the assessment and recommendation of Defense Secretary Eduardo Ermita who had recommended the implementation of the Somo [suspension of military operations] last month before deciding on whether to extend the ceasefire," Bunye said in an interview with RMN radio.

The President declared a Somo against the New People's Army (NPA) from Dec. 10, 2003 until midnight of Jan. 6.
