In a comparison of birth certificate data for live births to women in a total of 45 states and the District of Columbia, the prevalence of spina bifida and anencephaly decreased from 37.8 per 100,000 live births from October 1995 to December 1996, to 30.5 per 100,000 live births from October 1998 to December 1999, reported Dr. Margaret A. Honein and her associates at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
