DOZENS of orphans are being cared for at the centre in Kerman, 120 miles north-west of Bam. One official said at least 1,500 children are in similar care centres.
In a colourfully decorated room, about three dozen children, aged between two and six, most with injuries ranging from cuts and bruises to broken legs, wait for their parents, not realising they will not see them again.
"My parents are back home in Bam. They will come to see me soon,'' said six-year-old Atefeh Razmi. One nurse, unable to control her emotions, walked out of the room, sat on the ground and burst into tears.
The smiling Atefeh, unaware of her tragedy, solved a puzzle with another nurse's help. Other children played with dolls and toy cars.
