A GRIM New Year is facing a 26-year-old man who claims he will be forced to sleep on the streets when he is evicted from his flat this week because the authorities cannot find him an alternative.
Martin McMullan was served with notice to quit his north Belfast flat more than a month ago when the decision was made to shut down Finlays Store below it.
Although his landlord agreed to let him stay in the flat over Christmas, he had to cut off power supplies, leaving Mr McMullan with no heating over the festive period.
Despite daily calls to the Housing Executive, Mr McMullan says the only accommodation he has been offered is in homeless hostels which would mean he would lose his two beloved dogs, three-year-old Alsatian Sheba and 18-month-old Rottweiller Mike.
Mr McMullan, whose mother was hospitalised over Christmas, said: ''It sounds stupid but they're the only family I have. They're the only reason I have to get up in the morning.''
