PEOPLE should be ashamed of Northern Ireland's mistreatment of animals, a dog sanctuary said yesterday, as yet more pets were discarded with the Christmas wrapping paper.
The Assisi Sanctuary at Conlig, Co Down, has condemned Ulster's ''terrible record'' of cruelty to animals after taking in five abandoned pups and a one-year-old dog since Christmas.
The charity is asking any dog lover with a home for one or more of the animals to contact it - while expecting the number of unwanted pets to steadily rise throughout January.
Two of the five pups were brought to Assisi by owners who had decided that they were not an ideal Christmas present after all.
"One woman brought a pup in and said she could not stand the way it was following her everywhere,'' said Assisi spokeswoman Maureen Smith.
