REPUBLICANS must make it clear in the New Year that they have put away their guns for good, Secretary of State Paul Murphy said yesterday.
In his New Year's message, Mr Murphy said unionists need to have confidence that the IRA has been consigned to history.
And he urged parties to grab the opportunity in this month's review of the Good Friday Agreement to rebuild trust, which will lead to a re-established Assembly.
Mr Murphy said: ''For all of us involved in the political process the greatest challenge will be to deliver for the people of Northern Ireland a working Assembly.
"That's what people voted for and that's what all the parties - irrespective of their differences - want to see.
"But, for that to happen, we also need to rebuild trust. Unionists must be able to have confidence that paramilitary activity is a thing of the past, not a shadow over the future.
