TODAY marks the beginning of a new chapter in scouting history in Northern Ireland and the Republic as a combined organisation comes into being.
Following a proposal in Londonderry in 1995, Scouting Ireland has been designed to include members of Scouting Ireland (SAI) and Scouting Ireland (CSI).
Garrett Flynn from Scouting Ireland said the new organ- isation seeks to continue the outstanding work achieved by both groups but under a new all-embracing ethos and logo.
"We are not merging the two but forming a completely new youth organisation,'' he said.
Founded in 1927 as the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland, the CSI changed its name in 1997 to reflect its activities and the growing co-operation between the two scouting organisations in the island.
Mr Flynn said Scouting Ireland aims to contribute to the spiritual, moral, cultural and physical development of its members so that they may take a constructive role in society as mature adults.
