A powerful car bomb tore apart a popular Baghdad restaurant packed with New Year's Eve revelers, killing at least five people, all Iraqis, and wounding more than two dozen, including three Westerners.
The Nabil restaurant in the upscale Karrada district was virtually destroyed by Wednesday night's blast less than three hours before the clock ticked over to 2004.
"There were five people killed and 24 wounded, three of them foreigners," interior ministry spokesman Adnan Abdul Rahman said.
The Los Angeles Times said three of its journalists and four staff members of the newspaper's Baghdad bureau were wounded but their injuries were not life-threatening.
The attack occurred despite increased security measures by Iraqi police and US-led occupation forces for fear of trouble over the week-long Christmas and New Year holidays.
Guerrillas were expected to flex their muscles nearly three weeks after the Americans' capture of former president Saddam Hussein.
