The search by US FBI agents who boarded a British Airways plane just outside the US capital delaying its take-off for several hours was a routine check, an airline official said.

"As I understand, this is all part of the new sort of security measures adopted in the States, and it was a routine security check," he said Thursday, asking not to be named.

He said "what they're doing now is not just screening passengers as they depart but they select certain flights and also screen them on arrival as well, as I understand they selected that particular flight on a routine basis."

US federal agents detained and boarded British Airways flight 223 several hundred meters (yards) away from the main terminal at Dulles International Airport after it arrived from London's Heathrow airport just after 7:00 pm (midnight GMT) Wednesday, the company confirmed Thursday.
