MANILA, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - Donations from the international community continue to pour for the victims of the Leyte and Surigao landslides, with Korea extending P1.1 million or US$20,000 in humanitarian aid.
The donation was given by the Korean government through the Philippine Embassy in Seoul in response to the call for humanitarian assistance to sustain the ongoing rescue and relief operations in Southern Leyte and Northern Mindanao. These areas were hit by massive landslides and flashfloods last week killing more than 200 people.
Korean Ambassador to Manila Son Sang-ha, on behalf of his government and its people, also expressed deep sympathies to the bereaved families and those affected by the disaster during a meeting with Defense Secretary Eduardo R. Ermita, who is also the chairman of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
"The Korean government wished that the assistance could be of help to the Philippine government and its people to overcome the tragedy soon," the Korean government said in a statement.
