HOPING that the ghosts of Edsa II have been laid to rest, former Defense Secretary Orlando Mercado will make another comeback bid for a Senate seat in May, this time on the ticket of President Macapagal-Arroyo.
"It's time for the nation to move forward and leave behind this issue of whether one is pro- or anti-Erap," said Mercado, who in January 2001 joined the generals led by Armed Forces Chief of Staff Angelo Reyes in withdrawing support from impeached President Joseph Estrada. Their decision forced Estrada to leave Malacanang and led to Ms Macapagal's rise to power.
Mercado acknowledged that during the campaign season, "some will again raise [the issue of] Edsa II but I believe that our people have become less emotional about this chapter of our history."
Mercado is one of 11 Senate candidates of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats. The party is reserving the 12th slot for a Muslim.
The other candidates include reelectionist Senators Robert Barbers and Robert Jaworski and Secretaries Richard Gordon (tourism), Roberto Pagdanganan (agrarian reform), and recently resigned Manuel "Mar" Roxas II (trade and industry).
