THE COMMUNIST Party of the Philippines expects President Macapagal-Arroyo to be trounced by her opponents in the May 2004 elections and widespread protests to arise if she is declared the winner of the presidential polls.
"The broad masses of the people consider Ms Macapagal a liar for declaring on Dec. 30, 2002 that she would not run for president and then going back on her word after a few months," said CPP central committee chair Armando Liwanag.
Liwanag said there is widespread expectation that the President cannot win the election unless she engages in vote-buying or manipulates the newly adopted computer technology for the vote count.
The dire forecast of Ms Macapagal's chances in the elections was contained in the document "Boldly Advance the Philippine Revolution Amidst Worsening Global and National Crisis," which the CPP released in time for its 35th anniversary on Dec. 26.
"(Her) political rivals are preparing to rouse the people to make gigantic mass protests and to call for military intervention by their collaborators within the reactionary armed forces," Liwanag added.
