HAPPY New Year to everybody. I hope all your fingers are still intact. If not, I'm sure your top New Year's resolution is never to go near a firecracker again. If you have been bad the past year, I hope your resolution is to turn over a new leaf and be good for a change. If you have been good, I hope you continue being good. For goodness is its own reward, the satisfaction of knowing you did the right thing.

The New Year will bring an interesting political contest: the vice presidential race-Noli de Castro, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's running mate, versus Loren Legarda, Fernando Poe Jr.'s most likely running mate. Both are stars of the ABS-CBN network; whoever wins, the ultimate winner will be ABS-CBN, the Lopezes, Meralco, Maynilad Water, Benpress, etc. The losers could be the electric and water consumers in Metro Manila and suburbs.
But who is going to win? Who will the Lopezes support? De Castro consistently tops the poll surveys, but that can change, now that he is running with GMA and against Legarda. De Castro is weighed down by a heavy baggage, GMA; Legarda has an asset, FPJ.
GMA obviously courted De Castro to be her running mate in the hope that his popularity will win votes for her. But as has been repeatedly pointed out by analysts and proven in previous elections, a popular vice presidential candidate cannot always pull up an unpopular presidential candidate. In the 1992 elections, Erap won as vice president but his presidential running mate, Danding Cojuangco, lost.
