THE COMMISSION on Elections yesterday failed to resolve the split in the opposition's ranks, saying that Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino bets would have to file their certificates of candidacy as "independents."
Comelec Chair Benjamin Abalos said only two of the poll body's six commissioners showed up at the meeting that was supposed to resolve the impasse in the LDP after one faction said it was supporting Fernando Poe Jr. and another Sen. Panfilo Lacson for standard-bearer of the party in the 2004 elections.
"I have ordered election officers to accept their (LDP candidates') certificates of candidacy. In the meantime, they will have to file as independents," said Abalos in a phone interview yesterday.
The LDP is split between two factions, the one backing Poe is led by its chair Sen. Edgardo Angara, while the other which supports Lacson is led by secretary general Rep. Agapito "Butz" Aquino.
The two factions brought the issue before the Comelec to decide, with Angara saying that only he, as the party chair, had the authority to nominate the party's candidates.
