THAT was the year that was. Like Philippine show business itself, it was full of stunners and intrigues and laughter and sadness.

The king of Philippine movies himself, Fernando Poe Jr., on Nov. 26 ended all speculations about his political plans and announced he was seeking the highest office in the land this year. He said his love for country, and not his best friend, deposed President Joseph Estrada, helped him decide. Comedian Vic Sotto called him the man who could heal the land. Will his wife, Susan Roces, the queen of Philippine movies, be the next First Lady?

If FPJ's declaration was much anticipated, the news of the violent breakup of Kris Aquino and Paranaque Mayor Joey Marquez was a total bombshell that hit the country on Sept. 23 and left it reeling for days after. "Tinutukan niya ako ng baril," Kris said on nationwide TV. It was the gun that was not fired that was heard 'round the nation.

Last heard of, Kris admitted she and the mayor were talking again.
