EVERYTHING new is supposed to be good. A new car. A new dwelling. A new child. And yes, a new year.

Today being the first day of the year should make us upbeat. It's because today is one of the most special days of the year as it kicks off everything that we intend-or do not intend-to do this year.

Abet Guidaben, one of the country's finest basketball players ever, has said: "If you want to be a champion this year, start training on the first day of the year-even if the championship you are targeting is not up for grabs until December."

If you do not intend to achieve something good, something big, this year, start the job by sleeping the day away today.

To quote one sage, a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.
