Sammy Sosa Cubs' Star Focuses on Team Play
Slugger has stepped up his performance in an attempt to help bring back a winning tradition to Chicago's north side
SAMMY SOSA WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE himself if he could turn back the clock to a year ago. He went to Atlanta and the 2000 All-Star Game with a burning anger before the midsummer classic.
Sosa likes to joke with friends that there is a good Sammy and a bad Sammy. His evil twin was on the rampage in July 2000, flailing at perceived injustices.
"I went to the All-Star Game last year with a lot of anger inside myself," Sosa said. "I heard something that deep inside really bothered me."
Whether it was one voice or a chorus of rejections doesn't matter now. He won't specify, because his days of rage have burned out. What Sosa heard and felt simply was that he wasn't wanted or needed in Chicago. That shook him to his core.
In June 2000, when trade talks between the Cubs and New York Yankees intensified, Sosa accepted that he was going to become a Yankee. He was already considering the Cubs as part of his past and anticipating that another turn in his career was forth-coming.
