When did Washington Senators pitcher Tom Cheney get his 20th and 21st strikeouts in the 16-inning game against Baltimore on September 12, 1962? Did he go the route?
Tom Putnam Buffalo, N.Y.
Cheney pitched the distance, 16 innings, in that night game at Batlimore's Memorial Stadium, allowing 10 hits, striking out a record 21 batters and coming away with a 2-1 victory.
The Orioles used four pitchers in the game, including starter Milt Pappas, with relievers Dick Hall, Billy Hoeft and Wes Stock also taking part.
Cheney fanned Russ Snyder in the 15th inning for his 20th strikeout, and he got his last K on pinch-hitter Dick Williams on a called third strike in the bottom of the 16th inning for his 21st K.
In the game, Cheney threw 228 pitches, including fastballs, knucklers, sliders and curveballs. He fanned every Baltimore starting player except first baseman Boog Powell, whiffing five other batters three times each.
I could not agree more with Rich Marazzi's Rules Corner article entitled "Replay camera would help umps in making correct `distance' calls" (August Baseball Digest).
