SEOUL, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - The Hyundai Motor Co. said Wednesday that it sold 1.98 million cars in 2003, with combined sales reaching 27.8 trillion won (US$23.2 billion).
South Korea's largest automaker then said it sold more than $10 billion worth of cars abroad, with noticeable inroads made into places like China, India and Turkey.
Kim Dong-jin, vice chairman and CEO of Hyundai Motor, said the sale of 52,000 Sonata sedans in China during 2003 will be remembered as a shining example of an export success story. The executive then said that Hyundai's Chinese plant will have the capacity to produce 150,000 cars next year, 140,000 of which would be earmarked for sale in the mainland.
