The Meeting of the Waters: The Hindmarsh Island Affair, by Margaret Simons; Hodder Headline, 2003, $45.
IN The Meeting of the Waters Margaret Simons attempts to resurrect the "women's business" at Hindmarsh Island. This "women's business" was dismissed by Judge Iris Stevens at the end of the 1995 South Australian Royal Commission as having been recently concocted. Simons largely abandons what had been thought to be the essence of the "women's business": alleged abortion/infanticide practices during the nineteenth century and a supposed symbolic resemblance of the Murray River mouth and its islands to the female sexual organs.
