Corrupting the Youth: A History of Philosophy in Australia, by James Franklin; Macleay Press, 2003, $59.95.
JAMES FRANKLIN, the author of this indispensable guide to Australian philosophy, is a hard man to pin down. He is a mathematician (and the leading Australian interpreter of the great Malleyesque spoof of postmodernist mathematics--the Sokal Hoax) and he is an acclaimed historian of ideas. (One of his recent books is The Science of Conjecture: Evidence and Probability before Pascal.)
But he is also a smorgasbord Catholic. At any rate, he accepts that label. He means he is the sort of Catholic who believes the fundamentals of the res christiana but ...
