WHEN SOMEONE remarks that variety is the spice of life or claims to be monarch of all they survey; when they joke about tobacco being a pernicious weed or cry drunkenly, "England, with all thy faults, I love thee still", before moving on to cups that cheer but not inebriate and lamenting the fact that their wife moves in mysterious ways--they are quoting William Cowper. Until very recently, lines by Cowper (pronounced Cooper) whose sad life spanned the last three quarters of the eighteenth century, made up one of the bulkiest entries in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.
