The first US cow infected with mad cow disease was imported from Canada, the US Department of Agriculture's chief veterinary officer said.

The cow from Washington state was part of a group of animals brought in from Canada in 2001, Ron DeHaven told reporters, citing "very preliminary information" he received at around midnight Saturday morning.

"That information would suggest that the infected animal likely entered the United States as part of a group of 74 dairy cattle that were imported through the border crossing at Eastport, Idaho, originating from a dairy herd in Alberta, Canada in 2001," DeHaven added.
