ROSS WESTGATE, CNBC ANCHOR: Now today marks the first anniversary of Turkey and the E.U. opening membership talks. Turkey`s bid to join the European Union has been troubled by its reluctance to give concessions on northern Cyprus and its slow pace of social and economic reform. Moving talks forward is now crucial though as there appears to be an atmosphere of mutual estrangement. For more we are joined by Tolga Ediz, emerging markets strategist for Lehman Brothers.

Tolga, thanks very much, indeed, for joining us. A year on, there seems to be a mood of pessimism. Is that how you see it?
