During the third quarter of 2003, French private sector demand gained modest upward momentum, raising hopes that the economy had bottomed out and that internal demand will rebound in 2004. Realistically, the consumption panorama is mixed and will likely remain so through at least the first half of the upcoming year, making a sustainable recovery in internal demand unlikely

The business sentiment indicator began to rise in September of 2003 and the trend should generally be upward as 2004 progresses. Modest but steady production growth should prevail across the industrial spectrum, but will be most pronounced in the consumer and capital goods sectors. However, it is important to bear in mind that growth will be driven by export sales because internal demand will lack upward mobility
