Republican Congressman Mark Steven Kirk said on Wednesday that the government in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) should change in accordance with the recent elections, adding that the United States could offer a free trade agreement to Turkey if there was any progress on the island.

Kirk, who is known to be close to both U.S. President George W. Bush and U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, said that currently the European Union was not treating Turkey fairly, adding that a free trade agreement with the United States could strengthen Turkey's hand with respect to the EU.
