The long-awaited launch of West Rail today brings improved transport links to more than a quarter of Hong Kong's population. The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation's new line, in the making for nine years, will also have a positive impact on everything from employment to the environment.

The West Rail route, with 30.5km of track, starts from Tuen Mun in the west and passes through main population centres to end in Nam Cheong, in the heart of Kowloon. The 30-minute journey, with trains able to travel up to 130km/hr and average 60km/hr, takes half the time of a trip by road.
