IT WAS ANNOUNCED in January 1999 that the British National Maritime Museum at Greenwich would be modernised. Richard Ormond, the new director, said it was old-fashioned and must change with the times. He explained in Blairspeak: "Unless we find new intellectual purpose and bring home to people that the sea is still central to their lives, we will become a sideshow museum dealing with traditional artefacts to an increasingly limited market."

I visited the Museum website in December 1999. It bore out in some detail the gloomier predictions of commentators such as Sean Gabb that there was an agenda in place to destroy the museum's historical associations, ...
