WHEN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Richard Mukuya first began to run a temperature, his parents in the rural Kenyan village of Kisii tried not worry. They were hopeful that their son had contracted just another one of those nameless childhood diseases that would harmlessly run its course in a matter of days. The days passed, and Richard's condition continued to worsen. The boy did not respond to the traditional treatments used in the village for illness, and he ultimately slipped into a coma. His parents, realising that something was seriously amiss, made the fifteen-mile journey by foot to the nearest hospital for treatment.
