When Virginia Tech hired Dr. Karen DePauw as dean of its graduate school in 2002, it also agreed to hire her partner Shelli Fowler as a tenured professor of English.
But the school reneged on its promise, after a signed agreement and less than a month before the couple was to move to Virginia from Washington, where they both worked at Washington State University.
Finally Virginia Tech is making good on its promise, hiring Fowler as associate professor of English and director of the school's Graduate Education Development Institute. Campus protests and a petition drive supported Fowler, accusing the school of bias ...
