The University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee (UWM) was recently distinguished as a "Best Place for Women to Work" after a survey of Southeastern Wisconsin companies/employers by Milwaukee Magazine and MRA-The Management Association. It was the only higher education institution to make the list of 11.
Extensive criteria
What did it take to be named to this exclusive list? An extensive online application asked detailed questions in 10 different categories, such as salary, training, promotional practices, range of benefits and perks, work-life balance, diversity, employee voice in the workplace and community involvement.
Extras included UWM providing maternity and family leave, easy-to-use flexible schedules, job sharing and work-at-home opportunities, part time employee policies, and access to the top by promoting women to key management and executive positions. To assure honesty, randomly selected employees from the semi-finalists filled out an anonymous survey. Their answers, plus the in-depth surveys, produced the final list.

What's the UWM secret?
Three years ago, UWM certainly would not have been considered a "Best Place to Work for Women." So how did our university, especially a public one with HR policies controlled by the state, earn such a distinction?
