Larger wheels and tires have taken the fast lane, from street racing to showroom. Nearly 40 percent of new vehicles now leave the factory with larger, 16- and 17-inch wheels. Fewer than 10 percent did so in 1996.
The big-wheeled look has also grown into a $2.25 billion aftermarket business for tire dealers as drivers increase wheel diameter anywhere from 1 to 8 inches or more beyond the originals--known as plus-sizing.
