You don't have to clean out your checking account to get clean dishes. In our latest tests of 33 dishwashers, we found models selling for as little as $330 that did an excellent job of washing dishes caked with oatmeal, spinach, and other hard-to-remove food.

While it's possible to get sparkling dishes on a shoestring, you generally have to pay more than the minimum if you also want quiet operation, flexible loading, and stylish design. You may not have to increase the budget much, though, because previously nigh-end features are trickling down to less-expensive models. Among recent developments:
