The strangulation of a 13-month-old girl in Twin Falls, Idaho, in December 2002 has prompted Graco, a major manufacturer of children's products, to issue stronger warnings about a play yard used in more than a half-million homes.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is not insisting on a recall of Graco's Pack 'n Play portable play yard with raised changing table. But the manufacturer has agreed to provide a label for the play yard that cautions against placing a youngster inside the pen with the changing table in place. If that happens, the child could crawl under the table and lift it up, trapping his or her head between the changing table and play-yard rail--the scenario that claimed the life of the girl. According to Graco, no other such incidents have been reported.
Models: Grace Pack 'n Play play yards with raised changing table beating model numbers 2016, 35235, or a seven-digit number beginning with 9531 or 9533. They were sold from 10/1/01 to 9/23/03 at discount, department, and juvenile products stores for $99 to $119. "GRACO" and "Pack 'n Play" are on the side. Model number appears on a label on white plastic center cone beneath unit. Play yards in stores with the above model numbers have green stickers on box, indicating that they have been modified and pose no safety hazard.
What to do: Call Grace at 800-233-1546 or visit www.gracobaby.com for a free warning label to attach to changing table. Remove the changing table before putting a child in the play yard.
