Custom-made slipcovers can easily cost hundreds of dollars, depending on the fabric you choose. Reupholstering costs even more.
But how about an off-the-rack alternative--ready-made, machine-washable slipcovers from a store like Pottery Barn or a Web site like Sure Fit? They certainly win on price. We paid $69 to $179. The selection of colors and fabrics is generous. The Sure Fit choices range from denim to velvet to washable silk. But in our tests, the ready-mades didn't win for looks.
The best we tried, Pottery Barn's Loose-Fit love-seat cover, was made of high-quality reversible twill fabric and was nicely finished. Cost: $179. It's sized for furniture that's 60 to 76 inches wide. But it was oversized for our 66-inch love seat, and extra fabric puddled on the floor like too-long trousers. The arms were quite a bit baggier than they looked in the catalog photo.
We also tested a Sure Fit, ordered for $79, and a Wal-Mart (made by Sure Fit), $69. Once we fitted them on the sofa, they looked baggy and more ...
