New Komeito wins pension debate

The Liberal Democratic Party was forced to accept coalition partner New Komeito's policy of financing the public pension system by trimming fixed-rate income tax cuts introduced in 1999 during the debate over a pension reform plan that was decided by the ruling parties Wednesday.

New Komeito reportedly was adamant in its demands over pension reform as a result of its cooperation with the LDP in the Nov. 9 House of Representatives election and its agreement to the dispatch of Self-Defense Forces personnel to Iraq.

Some LDP members voiced strong dissatisfaction over the decision, saying the trimming of the fixed-rate income tax cuts would disadvantage many salaried workers. …
