I recall the occasion when it was required of my mother that a policeman help her with her parcels home. It was winter. It was raining. The policeman had a red nose. He stood in the kitchen. We were all in the kitchen. The kitchen was the centre of the house. We had never had a policeman in the house before.
The kitchen also included my father and my sister.
It was tea-time. It was when we had our tea. On an ordinary night my mother would have been getting it ready by now.
Anywhere! Anywhere! my mother said.
This was where to put the parcels.
My mother was flustered, embarrassed and beholden all at the same time.
The policeman released the parcels to the floor.
