When producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd established Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica in the autumn of 1963, it quickly became one of the most important and productive recording studios in the city, and played a significant role in the gradual development of reggae music over the following several years. One of the reasons it exerted such an influence was the presence there of the gifted pianist and arranger Jackie Mittoo, who would become one of the founding members of the groundbreaking Skatalites and the leader of Studio One's house band (which was known, at various times, as the Soul Brothers, the Soul Vendors, Sound Dimension, and the Brentford Road All Stars). In this capacity he was a well known and highly respected figure among professional reggae musicians, but the general public knew him primarily as the man behind a string of popular instrumental singles, all of which showcased his talents as an organist.
