The "supergroup" concept is one that has its origins in rock'n'roll; the idea was that if you combined famous players and singers from various popular or critically acclaimed bands, you would end up with a synergistic explosion of talent (and record sales). Too often, of course, the actual result was a loud clashing of egos and deep musical embarrassment. Jazz musicians, however, are used to sharing spotlights and recording studios with each other and trading the role of bandleader back and forth between them, so elite gatherings tend to be a bit mote successful in the jazz realm than in rock'n'roll.
