When Shirley Scott died in 2002, the jazz world lost one of its most tireless educators and one of the most skilled and tasteful exponents of the Hammond B-3 organ in the jazz idiom. A pianist since the age of six, Scott turned her attentions to the organ during high school, and quickly came under the influence of Jimmy Smith, the preeminent B-3 player of the period. She soon joined forces with tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and toured with his group throughout the late 1950s. She later met and married another important tenor saxophone player, Stanley Turrentine, and the two shared stages and recording sessions during the 1960s. In the 1980s and 1990s Scott went back to the piano, and worked steadily as a jazz educator during the last years ...
