With this disc, John Eliot Gardiner completes his three-volume survey of Joseph Haydn's late masses. (The first volume in the series [Philips 470 297-2] included the "Schopfungsmesse" and "Harmoniemesse"; the second [Philips 470 286-2] featured the "Nelsonmesse" and "Theresienmesse," with the Te Deum in C Major as an addition.) As on the previous two volumes, Gardiner performs the twin services of bringing well-deserved attention to an infrequently recorded segment of Haydn's massive oeuvre and of imbuing those works with a freshness and crispness of delivery that has been lacking in most previous accounts.
