The sole surviving painting created by Plains Indian artist Amos Bad Heart Bull has recently resurfaced in a private collection (Pls. II-VI). The painted textile depicts the Battle of the Little Bighorn in the Montana Territory in 1876, during which the Indians annihilated the attacking force of United States troops led by Lieutenant-Colonel George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876). The battle is seen through the eyes of the Indians and shows more than 150 horses and riders thundering across the plain. Amos Bad Heart Bull, a cousin of Crazy Horse (see Pl. VII), the chief of the Oglala Sioux, recounts the events as drown from the collected memories of the victors.
