MANATEE COUNTY -- The magnet school program isn't working and must be overhauled, Superintendent Roger Dearing told School Board members Wednesday night.
Dearing recommended cutting the number of magnet schools from 10 to no more than four, saying the school system took on too much too fast.
"Is 10 too many? Not if they're developed. Is 10 too many to try at one time? I certainly believe it is," Dearing said.
Dearing said he could improve the magnet schools if he could concentrate on just a few, open them only to students who want to study the chosen theme, provide transportation for them, give teachers ample training and win support from parents.
