At the University of Alabama-Birmingham, a $3.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation will help develop innovative methods to retain and increase the number of female faculty in engineering and the sciences. Principle investigator Jeannette Doeller said areas of emphasis will be creating awareness, improving recruiting and educating current faculty on what they need to do to succeed.
Initiatives will include creating five professorships for female junior faculty, funding three chairs for senior faculty, and creating a visiting scholars program. A new office for the advancement of women in the sciences and engineering will focus on career development and assess recruiting strategies and search committee composition.
