Dubai's Emirates Airlines announced a three-billion-dollar engine order with the American GE-PW Engine Alliance for its A-380 Airbus planes, with the second 1.5-billion-dollar phase of the deal signed.

Some aviation executives told AFP the fact that Emirates favored the US consortium over its British rival Rolls Royce might have been politically motivated in an effort to balance the make up of its fleet and engines between the Americans and the Europeans.
