SARASOTA -- Sarasota County School Board members said they feel as if they're being punished by having to approve their own pay raises.

So Tuesday they didn't. Instead, they voted 3-1 against giving themselves a 5 percent raise.

The decision means that, for the third year, they'll make $31,694 in the part-time position.

The Florida School Board Association recommended a salary $1,700 higher. But board members took exception to having to approve wage recommendations passed down from the state. Board member Frank Kovach said county commissioners don't have to go through the same process. …
