Waterstone's is rolling out a new matrix stock checking system in November, which builds a profile of each store's local tastes and allows buyers to tailor stock to their particular markets.

The Phoenix version 9 software processes stock information in the same way as previous versions.

Previously, staff needed to actively question the system for relevant information. Now it prompts them to consider particular books--from back catalogue and new releases.
